Couture Portraiture Policy

Purpose

The Couture Portraiture Policy exists to ensure that each couture portrait sitting is conducted with the highest standards of care, integrity, and alignment with the atelier’s philosophy.

Couture portrait sittings may involve the temporary use of:

  • couture garments loaned by the atelier,
  • couture garments commissioned by the client, and/or
  • garments owned by the client and brought to the sitting.

All such garments—whether loaned, commissioned, or client-owned—represent significant material, artistic, and personal value. Participation in couture portraiture is therefore offered selectively and is not guaranteed upon expression of interest.

This policy establishes the principles by which participants are considered, selected, and accepted, and the conditions under which couture garments may be used.

Nature of the Couture Portrait Sitting

A couture portrait sitting at The Vintage Couturière is conceived as a fine art, archival work—not a conventional photoshoot, fashion styling session, or commercial experience.

Each sitting is approached as:

  • a collaborative artistic process
  • a moment of authorship and presence
  • a record intended to endure beyond trend or novelty

Where couture garments are loaned by the atelier, participants are considered temporary custodians of couture works and are expected to engage with the garments, space, and process accordingly.

Where couture garments are commissioned by the client or owned by the client, the same standards of care, stillness, and respect apply.

Selection Philosophy

Selection is guided by alignment rather than availability.

Priority is given to individuals who demonstrate:

  • respect for couture craftsmanship and material integrity
  • emotional maturity and grounded intention
  • comfort with guidance, stillness, and discretion
  • reliability, care, and personal responsibility

Selection decisions are made solely at the discretion of the atelier and are final.

Consideration Criteria

Prospective participants are assessed across the following areas:

1. Respect for Craft

Evidence of understanding that couture represents time, handwork, lineage, and material intelligence—rather than costume, trend, or novelty.

2. Alignment of Intention

A clear and thoughtful reason for participating, often connected to a meaningful life chapter, transition, or personal authorship.

3. Capacity for Care

Demonstrated willingness and ability to follow garment handling guidance precisely during fittings and sittings.

4. Professional Conduct

Comfort working within defined boundaries, respecting the atelier’s expertise, and engaging in a collaborative but guided process.

5. Discretion

Understanding that couture portrait work requires privacy during creation and respect for image release timing and conditions.

Assessment Process

The selection process may include:

  • a written consideration questionnaire
  • follow-up clarification questions or correspondence
  • internal review against atelier criteria

Not all applicants will progress beyond initial consideration.

Additional correspondence or clarification does not imply acceptance.

Declining Participation

Declining participation is not a reflection of personal worth, appearance, or enthusiasm.

It reflects alignment considerations only and may include factors such as:

  • misalignment of intention
  • practical or logistical constraints
  • capacity limitations within the atelier

The atelier is not obligated to provide detailed reasoning for selection outcomes.

Garment Responsibility & Condition

Atelier-Loaned Garments

Where couture garments are loaned by the atelier, they remain the sole property of The Vintage Couturière at all times.

Participants acknowledge that:

  • they are temporary custodians only,
  • garments must be handled strictly in accordance with atelier guidance, and
  • any misuse or disregard for care protocols may result in immediate withdrawal of the garment or termination of the sitting.

Client-Commissioned & Client-Owned Garments

Where garments are commissioned by the client or owned by the client and brought to the sitting:

  • All garments must arrive clean, in good condition, and fit for wear.
  • The atelier does not accept responsibility for any damage, marking, staining, or deterioration occurring during the sitting.
  • Such garments remain entirely the responsibility of the client at all times.

The client accepts full liability for the condition and handling of their own garments before, during, and after the sitting.

Care & Safety of Couture

At all times, the atelier reserves the right to:

  • pause or adjust a sitting if garment safety is compromised
  • withdraw any garment from use if care protocols are not followed
  • terminate a sitting if conditions are no longer appropriate

These decisions are made solely to preserve the integrity, safety, and longevity of the couture work and the artistic process.
